I Shop, Therefore I Am

My name is Pink Champagne, and I'm a shopaholic.

Yes, ladies, it's true: I have given up shopping for Lent. Cold turkey.

It has been a day and a half, and I am on the verge of breaking already... it's going to be a loooong 40 days!

A few of my favorite quotes from my shopping soul sister, Rebecca Bloomwood:

Well, these cashmere gloves I need...as it is winter, and I have... hands!

So that's all. I'll buy these and these alone. My gosh, Missoni! Now walk away, strong and frugal. Oh, my God! Pucci boots. Fifty percent off? Do I need these? Do I need these? Do I NEED these?

When I shop the world gets better, the world is better; and then it's not anymore and I have to do it again.

A store can awaken a lust for things you never knew you needed.

You know that thing when you see someone cute and he smiles and your heart kind of goes like warm butter sliding down hot toast? Well that's what it's like when I see a store. Only it's better.

Uh, I mean, I like shopping. Is there anything so wrong with that? I mean, stores are put there to enjoy. Uh, the experience is enjoyable. Well, more than enjoyable. It's... It's beautiful. The sheen of silk, draped across a mannequin. Oh, the smell of new Italian leather shoes. Oh... The rush you feel when you swipe your card. And it's approved. And it all belongs to you!

This is my bridesmaid's dress. Please! How many of us have used that one before, hmm?

You sold all of your clothes and kept THAT?

It's a desperately important scarf.

Oh, why oh why didn't I just give up chocolate? Le sigh. Wish me luck, ladies... it's not going to be an easy road!

When I'm on self-imposed No Shopping periods of time (like now), if I get the urge to shop, I go to my closet. I dig out stuff from the back and assemble new outfit combinations. Pick a blouse and pick other pieces you wouldn't normally put with it. Plan an outfit around a pair of your shoes. Or earrings. Or something. It keeps you occupied and it's a creative outlet, PLUS you technically come out of the exercise with a new outfit :)

I say every time you come across something you normally would have purchased, write down the amount and keep a tally. Then, once Lent is over, donate half that amount to charity and put the other half towards a romantic vacation ;)

Good luck!! I gave up cupcakes and cake. Yesterday I was given a free piece of cake AND a man got on my elevator with a box of cupcakes. Of course I only get free cake when I can't have it. I promptly drove to my friends house and gave the cake to her! Whew!

I just rewatched that movie - love it! And good luck - eek, this has got to be the hardest time of the year not to shop, buying for spring/summer is my absolute fave!

From a fellow shopaholic ... I feel your pain, but you can do it! I know you can - if I can - you can! I did it for an entire year. *yes, you read that correctly" I thought it was going to be the hardest thing - but it got easier and then .... Liberating!

I am attempting to not buy clothes for a few months while doing some serious wedding planning, purging of old clothes. I can't wait to hear about how it goes--good luck! :)

And yes, Rebecca B. is also my soul mate. ;)
